The You Pronoun

Someone asked once, What is love?

Be lost in me, I said. You will know love when that happens.

Love has no calculating in it. That is why it is said to be a quality of God and not of human beings.
God loves you is the only possible sentence. The subject becomes the object so totally that it can't be turned around. Who will the you pronoun stand for if you say, You love God?

  1. This one slays me.

Love has no calculating in it. Why do we measure and calculate love? Compare? We're taught from the beginning to compare, measure, calculate. It is very, very hard to unlearn and undo that teaching.

To be so consumed by love, until the you is dissolved, and absolved, I seem to experience it only fleetingly.

  4. Yeah -- it was the "Love has no calculating" that absolutely hit me as deep, profound truth.

Yet, I am always measuring it -- go figure.

Time to go back to that place where I move more deeply into loves essence, and leave out my human thinking of what I think it should be.

At the request of a Rumi Reader, I have enabled comments, because I agree that someone, sometime might want to write about the power of Rumi's words. So many times they have met me in ways I just have to share, and so I want you to have that opportunity here. There is no expectation for comments, but please do write something if you feel the urge. ~ Ruth
