Barks did not translate Rumi; rather, he rewrote more literal translations into lyrical English. His note on this poem says it is from Book V of the Mathnawi in Reynold Nicholson’s edition. Perhaps that edition gives more information about the original. Interesting that "the one" does work, and then he becomes "our work." It's a beautiful thought, that our work IS the One. We become less, simply being, as we are filled with the One. We remain open, empty, so that the One can fill us. That is "our work."

In some sense, this is direct. Being filled with the river itself, instead of drinking water in vessels. We want to drink directly from the Source.

Of course this is a plea for this clarity, when much of the time it is very difficult to see so clearly.

Best wishes on your journey, Maliha.Ruthhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14204074161539605133noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9064015610319081123.post-77266403985101988952018-01-24T09:16:41.957-05:002018-01-24T09:16:41.957-05:00I started reading Rumi just a few days ago. Mary's Hiding (Luke...A Biblical Interpretation
Mary's Hiding (Luke 1:26-55)

Interpretations:
Lines 1-3 = addressed to you the reader. “before these possessions slip away”= so many wonderful things we have in Christ which may slip away (see footnote). For instance, the forgiveness of sins, or,
“you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession.”

Line 4 - “I'll hide in God” = Mary had a hidden faith in God which longed for the Messiah. So many in her age had a superficial or routine faith (as today), but Mary's faith was Messiah-centered like St Therese (Little Flower). Pure childlike humility and trust.
Line 5 – Naked in her room = not physical nakedness but a deep spiritual nakedness that made her completely exposed, surrendered to God.
Line 6 - St. Augustine says: "'Angel' is the name of their office, not of their nature. If you seek the name of their nature, it is 'spirit'; if you seek the name of their office, it is 'angel': from what they are, 'spirit', from what they do, 'angel.'" With their whole beings the angels are servants and messengers of God. Because they "always behold the face of my Father who is in heaven" they are the "mighty ones who do his word, hearkening to the voice of his word"
There's More - contact allthings@counsellor.comWill828https://www.blogger.com/profile/15188309039024251956noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9064015610319081123.post-38588238399480019272017-09-30T07:44:18.834-04:002017-09-30T07:44:18.834-04:00Faraz, I'm sorry I don't know.Faraz, I'm sorry I don't know.Ruthhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14204074161539605133noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9064015610319081123.post-13526158741065595812017-09-30T07:38:40.343-04:002017-09-30T07:38:40.343-04:00Beautiful poem, where can I find it in farsi?
